Environmental Portrait Photography for Corporate Executives, Small Business Owners & Professionals

Environmental Portraits are photographs of you shot in a situation where you live - be it at work, rest or at play. The location (environment) makes a clear statement about your life, work or lifestyle & adds visual interest plus important information about who you are, your interests & what you represent.

Environmental portraits have much more impact than do your typical 'corporate head shot' and generate far more interest in the viewer, who can now relate the portrait to the subject's life or work.

Environmental portraits should not appear posed (though they often would be) and should look natural & even candid, showing the subject at work or at play.

The subject should always be identifiable and should form the focal point of the image.

Benefits of Environmental Portraiture...

  • They provide better visual context to the image

  • They provide visual interest to the shot

  • They provide visual information on the subject's personality, lifestyle & work

  • They help the subject to be more relaxed & natural, rather than stiff and posed.

  • They come across more 'candid' & natural than posed shots.

The Importance of Location, Wardrobe & Props

Obviously, one always shoots environmental portraits in a location where the subject is comfortable. At times the location choice is quite obvious - i.e. the subject's work or play environment - but sometimes a more purposeful choice must be made, to fit the story that the image needs to tell.

The Location should add interest to the image and not be dull, boring or negative in any way, nor should it be so exotic & overwhelming that it dominates the shot and overshadows the subject.

Shot Composition is key - the subject should also be positioned in the shot in a way that keeps them as the focal point of the image - in other words, the environment should not dominate the image. Avoid cluttered backgrounds or foregrounds), colors that are too bright etc.

Props should be used selectively & with care.  Don't use props just for the sake of using them or because they look 'cute' or 'interesting'. They should always fit the subject matter at hand & relate to the context of the environment, avoiding anything that look unnatural or out of place or that could potentially distract the viewer.

Wardrobe should not be ignored. It should be what the person would normally wear in their situation & should not be too garish or outlandish unless that is really a part of their natural look.
